Sean James

Named by GardenMaking magazine as one of “20 Making a Difference” and by Landscape Ontario of 2020’s Garden Communicator of the year, gardening has been Sean James’ hobby and profession for almost 40 year. A graduate of Niagara Parks School of Horticulture, a Master Gardener, writer, and teacher, Sean focuses on eco-gardening techniques, which makes sense since he grew up surrounded by nature.Sean owns ‘Sean James Consulting & Design’ and instructs at Mohawk College.His presentation Bringing Back the Nearly Dead: Renovating an Existing Landscape will take us through step by step, dealing with a landscape afflicted with the usual challenges. Starting with a standard landscape, we will erase those challenges and redesign the situation of how to use the existing material & assets when upgrading an older landscape. Discussion will include design principles and construction priorities, winter interest, pruning and hardscaping.

Sherry has completed the Horticulturist Certificate from the University of Guelph, and has been an active member with the Durham Master Gardeners since 2011. Sherry completed a Certificate in Horticultural Therapy in 2016. She is committed to gardening in harmony with nature, supporting birds, butterflies, and other pollinators. Her interests include native plants and creating therapeutic and sustainable landscapes.

With a background that includes a 20-year career in the horticulture retail sector, 10 years as the Director of Horticulture at Toronto Botanical Gardens, and most recently as a professor with Niagara College’s Environment division Paul is well known in the gardening world. His step by step guide to creating an eye-catching and lasting planter while outlining the principles and beyond the box thinking are sure to inspire our members

Jim Charlier

Jim will be the first to tell you he is not a Gardener, Writer or Photographer but he likes to visit gardens, brings many of the ideas back to his own garden and travels to gardens around the world sharing his photographs and stories on his Art of Gardening blog and social media posts. His garden has also been featured in This Old House and on the Buffalo Garden Walk for many years, he co-wrote Buffalo-Style Gardens with Sally Cunningham (released in February 2019) and designed & produced a 120 page coffee table book, Buffalo’s Gardens with writer Elizabeth Licata and photographer Don Zinteck.  

In his presentation on Monday October 18th, Jim will bring Garden Walk Buffalo to us with a history of the walk, and pictures of the many original, creative and one-of-a-kind gardens. He will add insight to how it has become the leading Garden event in North America with (pre-covid)  over 60,000 visitors annually from all over the U.S., Canada, and abroad.
