Invasive Species Act

Ontario has the Invasive Species Act created in 2015. The Act which outlines the rules surrounding prohibited species, and restricted species.

Weed Control Act

Ontario also has a list of noxious weeds governed by the Weed Control Act.

Ontario Invasive Plant Council

The Ontario Invasive Plant Council (OIPC) is an incorporated, non-profit, multi-agency organization founded in April 2007 by a group of individuals and organizational representatives who saw the need for a coordinated provincial response to the growing threat of invasive plants.

They offer the ‘Grow Me Instead’ booklet which illustrates many invasive garden plants, and others, and provides native alternatives

Invasive Species Centre

The Invasive Species Centre is another group of government agencies (both provinicial and federal) and interested parties (Ontario ministry of natural resources and forestry, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Canadian Forest Service, Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, Federation of Ontario Cottagers Association, Ducks Unlimited Canada, Nature Conservancy Canada). It is here you will find much information on prohibited plants in Ontario, as well as regulated ones. The Canadian Coalition for Invasive Plant Regulation (CCIPR) brings together gardeners, Master Gardeners, scientists, educators, and community organizations committed to reducing—and ultimately preventing—the sale and spread of invasive plants in Canada.
