May COVID Update

All OGC membership meetings and activities remain suspended. That now includes our annual Plant Sale, scheduled for May 30th. Times certainly are changing, and we appreciate your patience as we adapt to these new realities. However, there are things happening with the club: OGC members continue to receive substantial discounts at local garden centres, the club is supporting local gardening initiatives and will be involved in the Virtual Peony Festival.

April COVID Update

April 2020

You will be aware by now that all OGC meetings and activities are suspended until further notice. That now includes our annual Plant Sale, scheduled for May 30th. We’ve also decided to suspend OGC Board Meetings, including virtual meetings, as it is our feeling that we cannot expect our volunteer board members to dedicate their time and energy on OGC business at the expense of their own family responsibilities.

Our main focus is on you, our members, and anything that we can do to support you as valued members, especially those who may be facing significant challenges in shopping, obtaining essentials and staying safe and healthy during this crisis. We urge you to reach out to us if you are in need. We will assist if we can or do our best to see that you get the help that you need from our community.

Many of us are fortunate to be in a good place and mainly in need of things to do to keep us sane and engaged and motivated as we hope for a sunnier future, and soon! We will do our best to source information for you to help you with your gardening pursuits as a wonderful way to rest in place, stay safe and stay active. (Check out our Facebook page). We are fortunate to have our gardens and steadily improving weather to help in that regard. Some will venture more into growing vegetables and for others, it will be the joy of growing plants on a sunny window sill.

Merle Cole, OGC President

Membership Update, March 29, 2020

Thank you for visiting our Website. The Oshawa Garden Club is still alive and well and operating in the shadow of COVID-19. While it is impossible to meet publicly and to do work in our community to run horticultural events and activities until further notice, we are using this downtime to think of ways that we can get back to doing all of those garden-related things that we all love.

Stay tuned for updates and visit our Friends of Oshawa Garden Club Facebook Page for immediate updates, ideas on gardening, to share our ideas, pictures and videos to feed our interest in things horticultural and to stay connected as a gardening community. By all means get out into your own gardens and the fresh air, but do it away from direct contact with others and WASH YOUR HANDs when finished. We will also try to provide updates on Facebook on where you can still get gardening supplies. Many suppliers are providing curb service for phone and internet orders. Again, stay safe and keep separated.

To our members, we will do our best to keep you posted on what will be happening by email and phone if needed. Please be patient as we all work through these difficult times and please consider all Oshawa Garden Club non-virtual activities to be suspended until further notice.

Will we have our annual Plant Sale? Good question as I know that many of you look forward to that every year. It is still scheduled for May 30th, but it is unlikely that it will happen as planned. We will wait until the end of April to cancel it officially so do keep in mind that we may still need your plant donations at some point in the future.

Watch this site too, for information on what garden centres are still open for curb service or pre-order pickups as we are contacting many of them to get that information for you. After all, Gardening is an essential activity.

In the meantime, stay safe, stay healthy and take good care of each other. Stay in touch with gardening friends and remember that gardening feeds the soul! Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns that you might have. Above all, Stay Calm and Garden On!

Yours in Gardening,
Merle Cole

Oshawa Bee City

Oshawa - 22nd Canadian Bee City and 17th in Ontario

Located on the eastern edge of the Golden Horseshoe in Southern Ontario, the City of Oshawa has joined the growing list of municipalities committing to taking actions to help pollinators! The City maintains several formal pollinator and community gardens. It has also amended its boulevard by-law to encourage planting for pollinators and is working to reduce mowing and increase naturalization in parks and areas adjacent to water.
